Vintage Hand-Turned Alaskan Birch Bowls by Buz Blum (Pair) csbh
Vintage Hand-Turned Alaskan Birch Bowls by Buz Blum (Pair) csbh
of American woodworking history. This set features two authentic, hand-turned birch bowls by the renowned late Alaskan master artisan, Buz Blum (1939–2002). Highly sought after by collectors of natural-edge wood art, Blum was a founding charter member of the American Association of Woodturners and celebrated for his organic, freeform vessels.
True to his philosophy, each piece features his signature maker's marks on the base, including the "Gen" (Mountain) trigram from the I Ching, symbolizing stillness, meditation, and his deep connection to the Zen community.
The Details
This nesting pair showcases Blum's masterful eye for transforming raw timber into elegant, sculptural art, highlighting the dramatic contrast between the smooth polished interior and the rugged, natural exterior of the tree.
The Large Bowl: Features a stunning, sweeping natural live-edge and a wide, dramatic crescent profile. Note: This piece features some natural, minor chips and wear along the delicate bark rim (see photos), adding to its rustic, wabi-sabi character.
The Medium Bowl: A slightly deeper companion vessel that nests beautifully alongside the larger piece, showcasing a brilliant golden grain and a smooth finish.
