Vintage 1920s Wooden Darn Potato
6"x2.5"x1"
How it works:
-
You slide the smooth, egg/potato-shaped wooden end inside the heel or toe of a sock that has a hole in it.
-
The wooden form stretches the knit fabric just enough to keep it taut and firm.
-
This provides a hard background surface, making it easy to weave a needle and thread back and forth across the hole (a process called "darning") without accidentally sewing the two sides of the sock together!
It’s a fantastic piece of early 20th-century domestic history. Today, collectors love displaying them in rustic mason jars on sewing room shelves, or textile artists still use them for hand-mending vintage clothing.
