Wedgwood Portland Blue Jasperware is a type of pottery created by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. It's known for its matte, unglazed finish and classical motifs in contrasting colors, typically white figures on a blue, green, or lilac background. The process involves adding metallic oxides to the clay to achieve the desired color.
These miniature pieces, while less common, were often made as display items or for dollhouses.
Jasperware became incredibly popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and Wedgwood's factory produced a wide range of items, including vases, plaques, cameos, and tableware. The designs often drew inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman art, reflecting the neoclassical tastes of the time. Miniature, attached cup and saucer pieces are less common than other forms of Jasperware, making them more desirable to collectors.
